World Series Game 7 most watched baseball game in 25 years
FOX had a great Wednesday night, game 7 of the baseball Word Series gave them massive ratings, around 40 million viewers. Not only Chicago Cubs fans have something to celebrate, the network is very happy to have been part of the most watched baseball game since 1991’s game 7, when the Minnesota Twins beat the Atlanta Braves. Fox estimates that more than 75 million viewers tuned into see all or part of the game on Wednesday night.
Overall, the 7 games World Series was the highest rated one since 2004 (Boston Red Sox vs. Saint Louis Cardinals). It garnered 48% higher ratings than last years New York Mets-Kansas City Royals World Series.
In 2012 Major League Baseball reached an eight year agreement, started in 2014, with FOX, TBS and ESPN for $12.4 billions. The deal gave FOX the rights to broadcast the All-Star Game and World Series until 2021. For sure when they signed the contract they were hoping for series like this one. It will be hard to surpass ratings like this, but they may be lucky and have teams from large markets like New York and LA in future World Series.
